MIAMI (CBSMiami) – The memory of Jose Fernandez will remain in the minds and hearts of Miami Marlins fans for a long time.

A reminder of the star pitcher will be outside Marlins Park now thanks to a resolution brought before Miami-Dade commissioners on Tuesday.

There were no votes against renaming an avenue outside of the ballpark Jose Fernandez Avenue.

That may surprise some following the release of a toxicology report that showed Fernandez had alcohol and cocaine in his system at the time of the boating crash that claimed his life and the two people on the vessel with him.

Bruno Barreiro, who sponsored the resolution, submitted it before the autopsy report was released last weekend.

He said Fernandez "paid with his life" for the tragic accident.

"This naming is for the life he led as a baseball player," Barreiro said. "He reached heights that very few have reached."

Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez has the power to veto the vote but he is not expected to as mayoral vetoes are extremely rare.

The resolution will take effect in ten days.
