SUNRISE (CBSMiami) - A Code Red at Piper High School was lifted after police found a student who was reportedly armed with a knife.

Police were called to the school at 8000 NW 44th Street after two students got into a fight. The 15-year-old said a 16-year-old pulled a knife during their fight.

Arriving officers were given this information and set up a perimeter.

"I heard someone with a knife on campus and there was fighting," said 12th grader Tamatra Chambers.

"I just feel like I can't believe this is happening on a school campus," said 11th grader Owen Davis.

Parents received a phone call about the lockdown which lasted about an hour.

"We are on Code Red, Code Red for a lockdown. We want to assure you that all protocol is being followed. Students and staff are being protected and safety is of our utmost concern," said the recorded message.

Police said they found the student and a knife was recovered. The student was taken into custody and lockdown was discontinued.

"I just feel like this shouldn't be happening and this is really unnecessary. It took a lot from our day," said 12th grader Briana Saint-Phard.

One of the students involved in the fight sustained a cut on his finger. Police have not said if the cut came from a knife.

Ray Prince, a 10th grader, said he knows the student who was taken into custody.

"Kind of bad kid and on Instagram he posts a lot about guns and a lot of violence," he said. "This could have been worse. This could have been a lot worse."

"It's got to stop, it has got to stop somewhere," said 10th grader Omar Sweeting.

Parents agreed.

"We have to do something about this, maybe enhancing security. This can't be happening," said Doug Rosen.

Sunrise police said the student who brought the knife to school is being charged with aggravated battery.
