MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Authorities in Miami-Dade County are investigating a police involved shooting.

The shooting took place at Northwest 70th Street and Northwest 20th Avenue.

According to authorities, officers were dispatched at approximately 2:20 p.m. to a call of shots fired.

Dwight Wells, who led the Bikes Up, Guns Down protest in Brickell on Dr Martin Luther King Jr Day, describes what he saw Monday.

"We thought somebody was trying to beat him up. But it became the police in the charger right there," he said. "I didn't hear any shots fired prior to the police getting here."

Wells said he initially thought a teen was running away from someone trying to beat him up. But he quickly learned police were after him.

Upon arriving, police say officers observed three teen males leaving the area on foot and bicycles.

Officers didn't say how long it took them to show up following the call.

"As they were responding to that area, they saw three subjects fleeing from the area," Miami-Dade police Sgt. Carlos Rosario said.

Police say one of the suspects was armed and apprehended immediately.

The other two suspects continued to flee, but soon after one was apprehended without further incident, police say.

Police say the third teen suspect, who also had a gun, was shot as detectives attempted to apprehend him.

He was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital in stable condition with a gunshot wound to a lower extremity, according to police.

Police say the two guns taken from the scene were reported stolen.

Currently, police say it's unclear if any of the teens opened fire on the officers.

"The [Florida] Department of Law Enforcement is investigating exactly who fired and when they fired," said Sgt. Rosario. "It's all under investigation. The information we have is that there were two shooting officers from Miami-Dade Police Department."

Those two officers have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard. One of those officers is an 11-year veteran of the Miami-Dade Police Department while the other has been with the force for five years.

Police say two of the teens are 15 years old and the other is 16.

The incident took place a block away from Liberty City Elementary School.
