MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) — The son of Opa-locka’s mayor has become the latest to face charges in a federal corruption investigation involving the South Florida city.
Mayor Myra Taylor’s son, 41-year-old Demetrius Corleon Taylor, surrendered to the FBI Tuesday morning, CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald reports.
He pleaded not guilty to a corruption charge at a Tuesday afternoon hearing.
Taylor does not hold an official position with the city, but records show he conspired with former city manager David Chiverton and others to shake down local business owners for thousands of dollars to take care of their licenses, code violations and fines.
Chiverton and Gregory Harris, a public works supervisor, have previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy charges. Chiverton received three years in federal prison. Harris is awaiting sentencing.
Taylor’s mother has not been charged.
