Port Everglades Opts For App To Speed Up Cruise Passengers' Return

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) -- An app - used to speed up passport control - is now being used for cruise ship passengers at Port Everglades.
Starting Friday, travelers coming into Broward County's port can use the Mobile Passport app to cruise through long lines at passport control.
Port Everglades is now the first U.S. seaport to use the smartphone technology which is already being used at over 20 major U.S. airports including Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Miami International Airport.
The app is meant to expedite travelers' entry process into the United States.
It allows U.S. citizens with a passport, getting off their cruise ship or flight, to fill out their Customs declaration form using their smartphone or other mobile devices, making it a faster process for them and the Customs officer.
You simply fill out your profile with your passport information, answer questions about your trip and submit your information once you arrive. Make sure you get the receipt!
Once you're off the cruise or flight, follow the signs to the Mobile Passport Control lane. You scan your receipt once you're there and show your physical passport to the U.S. Customs & Border Protection officer.
Be aware that your mobile passport does not replace your physical passport. Make sure to bring it on your trip!
The app is now available on iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, and is expected to be available on Android phones later this month. Click here for more information on the app.
