Murphy, Rubio Debate Cancelled Over Spanish Language Issue

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Florida Senator Marco Rubio and his challenger Patrick Murphy are at odds over whether Rubio could speak Spanish during a debate that was scheduled for next week.

That Univision debate - scheduled for October 28th in Miami - has since been canceled due to the language issue since both sides could not come to an agreement.

Rubio and Murphy's camp issued statements on the matter on Friday - each side blaming the other.

Murphy's Campaign Manager Josh Wolf  issued a statement on the matter saying in part,

"In 2010, Marco Rubio agreed to the exact parameters we are requesting, debating Charlie Crist and Kendrick Meek in English on Univision, so we were shocked that he no longer thinks that arrangement is reasonable."

Rubio's spokeswoman Olivia Perez-Cubas issued a statement on the matter as well, saying in part,

"Patrick Murphy is blowing off the Univision debate, just like he's blown off Florida's Hispanic community for the last four years. Clearly he doesn't want to explain why he uses Dreamers as a talking point in this race, even though he voted to deport them in 2013. Or maybe he's pulling out because he just doesn't understand Florida's Hispanics, a community he completely ignored until weeks before the election."

The Univision debate was not the only scheduled debate. The two debated earlier this week at the University of Central Florida.

The next debate, which will be in English, is scheduled for Wednesday at Broward College in Davie.
