PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (CBSMiami/AP) -- Authorities say three California police officers have been shot and two have died from their wounds, according to Palm Springs Chief of Police Bryan Reyes.

At a media briefing, officials said the officers were responding to a "family disturbance" call.

The shooting comes days after a Los Angeles County sheriff's sergeant was shot and killed in the high desert town of Lancaster. Sgt. Steve Owen was answering a burglary call when sheriff's officials say he was shot by a man who then stood over him and shot him four more times, killing him. A paroled robber has been charged with that murder.

Police indicated that they are actively searching for Saturday's shooting suspect.

SWAT teams and other agencies responded to the scene and a perimeter was set up in the area.
