Kids Walk Away From Bus Crash In Miami-Dade

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Children on a bus left on its side after a crash underneath Florida's Turnpike were able to walk off from the scene without a scratch

Authorities said a white Kindercare.com bus - carrying 9 kids - collided with a red truck Thursday morning.

Chopper4 was over the scene as the bus could be seen on its side with a red truck nearby that had major damage to the bed of it near SW 152nd Street.

Not one of the kids, between ages 6 and 7, had even a bruise or a scratch, according to police. They were all wearing their seat belts

Parents, understandably worried, rushed to the scene, as the children were kept in a group under the Turnpike overpass.

Police say the pick-up truck driver was at fault in the crash. It reportedly turned in front of the van that had the right of way eastbound on Coral Reef Drive.

After the crash, the truck driver was picked up by a woman who took him to an emergency room to be checked out.

The driver of the bus was taken to Jackson South Community Hospital after his shoulder harness may have cracked a rib in the crash, police said.

KinderCare Education released a statement on the matter, saying, "This morning, a bus from one of our KinderCare centers was involved in a car accident. EMTs responded quickly and children have been released to their parents. We're so grateful to the Miami-Dade police and fire departments for their quick response." 

At the Deerwood KinderCare, parents had nothing but good things to say.

"Safety is always the number one thing. The kids are always in really good hands," said parent Robin Shaughnessy.

Florida is only one of five states that require seat belts in all school buses.
