CORAL SPRINGS (CBSMiami) – Fort Lauderdale Police Detective Christopher Sheehan died early Sunday morning after being involved in a car accident in Coral Springs.
According to the Sun Sentinel, the crash happened around 2:30 a.m. at the intersection of State Road 7 and Wiles Road.
Injured in the crash was Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue Captain Jacob Snowhite, 41.
Snowhite resides in Jupiter and remains hospitalized, per the Sun Sentinel.
According to Coral Springs Police, Sheehan was driving a 1995 Jeep Wrangler heading north on State Road 7 when the vehicle was rear-ended by a 2010 Dodge Challenger driven by 29-year-old Joselyn Lopez.
Sheehan was declared dead at the scene while Lopez was not injured.
Police say that a preliminary investigation indicates speed and alcohol may have been contributing factors.
Fort Lauderdale Police released the following statement on Sunday afternoon:
“We can confirm that Detective Christopher Sheehan, a seven year police veteran was our employee, and is the same person that was involved in the accident. As you are aware, this is an on-going investigation by the Coral Springs Police Department. As such, we will have no further comment at this time. We ask that you please respect Detective Christopher Sheehan’s family and our agency during this difficult and grieving moment.”
