MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A weekend of intense confrontations between police and demonstrators ended with hundreds of arrests across the country.

There were even more protests Monday as people headed back to work, a reminder that this national debate is still ongoing.

"The city of Philadelphia is watching, the whole world is watching," a protester said.

One of the largest protests took place Monday morning in Philadelphia where a predominantly white group of demonstrators showed support for the Black Lives Matter movement.

"We wanted a chance to show there are white people in this city who are outraged," another protester said.

The demonstrators disrupted traffic and marched into city hall. They also called out the names of black men killed confrontations with police.

"Dialo Grant! Dialo Grant, age 27! Karon Williams, age 19! Black Lives Matter," they yelled out.

Similar protests took place over the weekend in Los Angeles, Memphis, Tennessee, Seattle and Cleveland.

In Baton Rouge heavily armed riot officers moved into a neighborhood where protesters gathered Sunday night.

"You are the only ones armed in this crowd!" a protester yelled at police. "Put the guns down! Put the guns down!"

For many, a photo of a young woman in a dress being detained by police has come to symbolize the Black Lives movement.

Officers got physical with demonstrators ordering them to leave the area.

"You must leave now!" the officers commanded.

When they didn't – even those invited to stand on private property – were led away in handcuffs. Police said the protesters were breaking the law.

Police in Baton Rouge said protesters threw chunks of concrete at the officers, who escaped serious injury thanks to their protective gear.

One officer in Saint Paul, Minnesota was not as fortunate. He suffered a fractured vertebrae after being hit with a piece of concrete.
