MIAMI (CBSMiami) - With Sen. Gwen Margolis deciding to step down this year, former North Miami Mayor Kevin Burns has thrown his hat into the ring.

Burns opened an account to run in Miami-Dade County's redrawn Senate District 38, according to information posted Thursday on the state Division of Elections website.

Burns has joined a crowded field for a South Florida Senate seat.

Margolis announced last week she will not run for another term after a controversy stemming from disparaging comments she made about her primary opponents.

With formal qualifying next week, six Democrats are vying for the seat. In addition to Burns, there's state Rep. Daphne Campbell, former Rep. Phillip Brutus, Anis Blemur, Don Festge and Jason Pizzo. No Republicans have opened campaign accounts for the race.

Meanwhile, in a Central Florida House race, no-party candidate Robert Rightmyer has opened an account to run against Rep. Jennifer Sullivan, R-Mount Dora. Sullivan had been running unopposed in House District 31, which includes parts of Lake and Orange counties.
