MIAMI (CBSMiami) - U.S.1 near Sunset Place was closed to traffic for several hours Tuesday after an early morning violent crash.

The accident happened near Red Road/SW 57th Avenue. Miami-Dade police said the driver of a BMW was traveling northbound around 4 a.m. when he lost control, hit the center median, spun out of control and crashed into a business at the mall.

"The car was going at a high rate of speed for sure," said South Miami Police Chief Rene Landa. "The impact that it made with the concrete wall, spinning off, hitting a concrete poll, both of the people that were inside the car were ejected out of vehicle."

Those men, described as being in their early 30s, were taken to Kendall Regional Trauma Center where they were listed in critical condition.

James Anderson, who lives nearby, said he heard when the car hit.

"It woke me up. Just a BOOM," he said.

Debris from the crash covered all lanes of U.S. 1 for a block or so. The front end of the car was literally torn off, it's engine ended up near the sidewalk.

"When you see what it left of this car, I mean it hit a concrete wall and just disintegrated," said Landa.

All lanes of U.S. 1 between SW 70th Street and 57 Avenue were closed to traffic until about 11:30 a.m.
