MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Local political and business leaders joined in a call Tuesday demanding Congress to address the gender pay gap.

Tuesday marked Equal Pay Day which shows how far into the new year women have to work to earn the same wages a man earned in the previous year.

Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz joined in the demand during an event at Pembroke Pines beauty salon, Kaizen Beauty Academy, that pays its male and female employees equal wages for the same job.

Wasserman Schultz, along with local business leaders, were pushing for Congress to address the pay gap by passing the  Paycheck Fairness Act (H.R. 1619), which Rep. Wasserman Schultz is an original co-sponsor of.

President Barack Obama also joined in bringing attention to Equal Pay Day - this time on social media.

It's been more than 50 years since the Equal Pay Act passed and women still make 79 cents to a man's dollar.  That gap widens for women of color.  African-American women are paid only 60 cents and Latinas only 55 cents for every dollar paid to white, non-Hispanic men.
