A Plantation woman accused of putting her 2-year-old daughter in a dumpster will be allowed supervised visits once she gets out of jail.

A Broward judge told Catrice Sheffield her child would remain in protective custody until a suitable temporary home is found.

Earlier, a judge had set bond for Sheffield at $16,000.

Sheffield was arrested Wednesday at a Plantation medical building and charged with child abuse and resisting arrest.

According to an arrest report, Sheffield told witnesses "I had a miscarriage five months ago and I'm depressed.

A medical assistant helped rescue the toddler.

"I ran and got the child out of the trash because I didn't want her to remember that moment," said Sudien Graham.

"I never thought she'd do anything like this, it's crazy," said Kinzell Payne, the father of the child.

Payne wants temporary custody and a judge said he could have that once he has a clean drug test

Sheffield's mother made a bid for custody at a shelter hearing but her daughter made it clear because of past conflicts she preferred the baby's father or paternal grandmother to have custody.

Graham said she's glad the child wasn't hurt and that she was in the right place at the right time.

"I think anyone would have done it. I was glad I was able to help the baby," Graham said.
