LAUDERHILL (CBSMiami) -- A high school student who was stabbed after getting off a school bus in Lauderhill continues to recover at the hospital while a 16-year-old girl is facing charges.

Lauderhill Police received a 911 call at around 3:20 p.m. Wednesday in regards to a disturbance in the area of NW 56th Avenue and 19th Street.

"The initial information we were getting is that it was a large group of juveniles," said Lauderhill Police Department Lt. Greg Solowsky. "The caller believed there was possibly a fight in progress."

Police say a group of Piper High School students had been dropped off by a school bus when a verbal fight broke out.

Responding officers say they spotted a group of about 10 to 20 students a couple of blocks from the original scene in the area of NW 58th Avenue and 19th street.

"When the officer got out of his vehicle and the crowd dispersed, we noticed that there was one victim laying on the ground, come to find out he was the victim of a stabbing," said Solowsky.

Police say the teen was rushed to Broward General Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries.

Relatives of the teen rushed to check on his condition.

"It's cruel.  It's just wrong for somebody to do something like this," said Kizzy Brown, who says she's the victim's cousin.

Hours after the initial incident, Lauderhill Police made an arrest.

"Fortunately we had a lot of witnesses who did remain on the scene," said Solowsky.

A 16-year-old girl, who police say attends Piper High, has been charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

Police continue to investigate what led up to the stabbing.
