FORT LAUDERDALE (CBSMiami) -- A man who drove from Lauderhill to Fort Lauderdale Beach, heard muffled meows when he got out of his car, prompting a rescue Thursday morning.

The driver called Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue around 8 a.m., saying he heard sounds coming from beneath the vehicle, specifically near the wheel.

Firefighters made their way to the home and found a kitten entangled with the suspension arm of the car, making it difficult to simply pull the kitten out.

That's when they used extrication material to lift the vehicle, remove the tire and untangle the kitten from where it was perched.

They were able to get the kitten out safely but noticed he was soaked, leaving no doubt the frightened feline had surfed through some wet areas during the extreme high tides in Fort Lauderdale.

Since the kitten had no identification, one of the firefighters claimed it as part of his family. The car has since been reassembled.
