MIAMI BEACH (CBSMiami) - An investigation is underway after a deadly shooting at a Miami Beach apartment building.

The shooting happened around 9 a.m. at the Flamingo Towers on South Beach, located at 1500 Bay Road.

Police spokesman Ernesto Rodriguez said a man was shot and killed in the 3rd floor skyway.

People who live in the building are pretty shocked, learning a man was gunned down in an inside public area.  This skyway connects the buildings in the complex.

"Scary, shocking as well," said resident Rorigo Gonzalez.

Sarah Tankiewocz of Detroit said she was concerned when she came downstairs and saw all the police cars.

"It's terrifying. I'm here visiting with my cousin, we just got here yesterday, so it's kind of scary," she said.

Jonathan Babicka said after he heard what happened he was ready to pack up his baby and move.

"There's always something going on but I really didn't think that it would escalate to this point," he said.

A person who lives in the building said he saw the victim about 2 a.m.  He said us he's a former army ranger.  Most people didn't even know their was trouble until they saw police.

"We were up on the 31st floor so i just saw the ambulance and fire trucks come in," said the neighbor.

From the beginning, police said they were not looking for the shooter - -they said they had "parties of interest detained."  That's not much comfort for people who feel violence in the area is increasing around them.

"It's not a safe place anymore," said Robert Mills. "I'm 67 years old and I'm in pretty good shape, but i don't feel like walking around at night anymore and I don't want to carry a weapon."

The name of the man who died has not been released.
