MIAMI (CBSMiami) – Dozens of residents of an Opa-locka apartment building were forced out of their homes overnight by a fire and now the person responsible is apologizing.

Edwina Jones  apologized because she's the one who left the candle burning that the firefighters think started the blaze.

The fire broke out in a first floor apartment at 1355 Ali Baba Avenue and quickly spread to a car parked nearby.

"I have third degree burns all over me," said Jones. "I couldn't put the fire out it just kept spreading"

Jones credits Her dog milt for waking her up and saving her life..

"My dog jumped up on the bed and started bothering me, so I woke up and I saw the fire," said Jones who tried to put out the fire but couldn't. "Everything burned up, everything," said Jones.

Firefighters had to go door to door to evacuate the 38 adults and 19 kids in the building, most of whom were asleep. There was smoke damage in many apartments. It even travelled to Deion Robison mom's  car.

"It was on fire real bad .. She had slot if imports to papers in there," said Robinson.

The people living there are just glad it wasn't worse

Red Cross officials sent out info saying they are helping out but some displaced residents said they don't have anywhere to stay tonight and this building is boarded up.
