MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- Ferris wheels are popping up in the South Florida skyline, a clear sign that the Miami-Dade County Fair and Exposition is back.

Preparations and final inspections are underway ahead of the big opening. Whether you're looking for an adrenaline rush or some family friendly fun, they've got it all.

"It's tremendous fun whether you want to ride, whether you want to eat, whether you want to play games it's your choice," said Bob Hohenstein, President and CEO of the Miami-Dade County Fair and Exposition .

The 64th Annual Fair is expected to attract more than half a million visitors and is running for 21 days this year.

It's longer than ever before but the future of the fair could be in for a roller coaster ride.

Florida International University (FIU) wants to take over use of the Tamiami Park fairgrounds to expand its campus. A referendum approved by voters in 2014 allows the school to build on the property if another suitable location is found to relocate the fair.

"We are going to be here in Tamiami Park for many many, many years to come," said Hohenstein.

In a strongly worded letter to the public, Hohenstein wrote: "Despite FIU's $1.6 million political campaign... Despite enormous political pressure.. Despite half-truths, propaganda, and false statements..We aren't going anywhere any time soon."

"We want to follow the terms and conditions of the lease signed that is valid through 2085, 70 years from now," said Hohenstein. "There has been no site found. There has been no funding from FIU or the state taxpayers which is basically where that money is going to come from."

FIU released a rebuttal statement saying: "Sixty-five percent of Miami-Dade voters supported a referendum to allow FIU the same privileges the Fair has enjoyed at Tamiami Park for almost 50 years. The voters made the right choice because expanding FIU is about our future. And the future is where we need to keep our eye as we work through the specifics of finding a new location for the Fair."

Despite the dizzying drama, the show must go on.

The Fair starts tomorrow and runs through April 5th. General admission tickets are $12 but they always have specials going on.
