TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami/AP) — Governor Rick Scott is standing behind a campaign promise to boost spending on public schools.

On Monday, he released part of his budget recommendations during a visit to the Atlantic Technical College in Coconut Creek.

Scott has proposed increasing spending on the state's public schools by $842.5 million. That increase would boost the average amount spent on each student to $7,176 or about $261 higher than it is during this school year.

If approved by legislators it would raise overall public school spending to nearly $20 billion. That would be the highest overall amount spent without adjusting for inflation.

Scott's office has not released full details about the proposal. But the increase would rely on more property taxes from local school districts.
