NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE (CBSMiami) – Miami-Dade police are searching for the drive-by shooters who injured nine people at a basketball court on Monday afternoon.
“It doesn’t make any sense, why would you come shoot up a park where its full of people,” a witness told CBS4.
An indiscriminate shooter drove past the basketball courts at Arcola Lakes Park – NW 17 Ave. and NW 87 St. – opening fire at around 5 p.m.
“It was rapid, it was a lot of gun shots,” another witness recalled.
Trugon Bryson, 16, was shot in the head and is in critical condition. Two other 16-year olds, a 17-year old and five young adults were also hit.
When multiple shots rang out , Garrett Brown began to run with dozens of other young people.
“It sounded like an automatic, it was a lot of shots going,” said Brown. “After the gunshots everyone was like oh I got hit, I’m shot, then I felt the blood coming from my legs and I’m like I’m shot too.”
“It’s all of this commotion going on its real sad,” a witness said. “That we can’t all come together and come along.”
Brown’s mother Linda Washington heard the shots from down the street. She panicked and says the park looked like a battlefield with teens on the ground everywhere.
“Just to see that kid with the bullet in his head, and my thought, where is mine, where is mine, and for my nephew to yell that he’s been shot, I just got sick. It was a sick feeling it was real scary,” said Washington.
She jumped in a car with Garrett and a few other victims and rushed to the hospital.
“He was calm. He was calmer than I was. He was like, ‘mom I’m good. I’m good. Calm down,'” said Washington.
Police said all of the victims, except for Bryson, were shot in their extremities and are expected to fully recover.
Detectives do not know the motive for the drive by shooting.
Police are looking for a dark, possibly black, newer model Nissan Maxima.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS.
