MELBOURNE, Fla. (CBSMiami/AP) — The first female four-star general is being honored by a Florida institute this weekend.

Four-star Gen. Ann Dunwoody is receiving local honors with the Distinguished Alumnus Award from her alma matter Florida Institute of Technology.

Dunwoody became the first woman to earn the four starts back in 2008. She retired in 2012.

The general said she didn't plan on making the military her career. Her original goal was to become a coach after participating in college level gymnastics. But after she earned $500 a month from the Army during her senior year in college, she decided to join and was commissioned as a second lieutenant.

She earned a master of science degree in logistics management from Florida Tech in 1988. She enrolled at the schools off-site program at Fort Lee, Va.
