Friday Flix: 'The Best of Me'

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Nicolas Sparks' bestselling novel "The Best of Me" is now on the silver screen.

It tells the story of Dawson and Amanda, two former high school sweethearts. The two find themselves reunited after 20 years apart, when they return to their small town for the funeral of a beloved friend.

Their bittersweet reunion reignites the love they've never forgotten.

James Marsden plays the grown up Dawson opposite to Michelle Monaghan's character Amanda.

Marsden insists this film is not just a chick flick.

"I think it represents some masculinity here. How you shouldn't forget how to treat the woman you love, and you can never be too romantic or too thoughtful," he said.

The movie explores the question: Could your first love really come back and work the second time around?

"I think we are all thinking about that more with Facebook and social media, " Marsden said. "It's making it easier to explore some of that, which could be bad. I'm not condoning that, but it does makes you think, what if?"

The 41-year-old actor has had his fair share of hit movies, from "27 Dresses" to "The Notebook"  and "Enchanted" just to name a few. However, Marsden said he was actually surprised and humbled when he got the lead for "The Best of Me".

"I've never thought as myself the big leading man, James Bond guy. I'm more like Bond's dorky little brother who can occasionally pass off as a leading man," he said. "But I like playing different characters. One of the great things about being an actor is not doing same thing over and over again"

Marsden said playing opposite to actress Michelle Monaghan was a breath of fresh air.

"It's so important that you get along with the person you're acting with in these types of movies and enjoy sharing time with them. She's Amanda. She's a radiant light and her smile is like the sun,"  he said.

"The Best of Me" is now playing.
