Miami Residents Protest Plan To Clean Up Toxic Park

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Dozens of Miami residents protested the city's plan to clean up six parks with toxic soil over the weekend.

On Sunday they gathered at Merrie Christmas Part to rally against the proposal to clean the parks by covering up the toxic soil with clean soil. The trouble is, they said, was that the toxic soil would then be spread to other areas of the park.

Residents said the plan could put their health and community at risk.

"You're basically throwing your residents, your constituents, under the bus not only once but twice. You're potentially ruining property value," said Jose Rey.

The City of Miami says the remediation project meets all government regulations and that removing all of the contaminated soil will be too expensive for taxpayers and it's not the typical procedure the Department of Environmental Resources recommends

Merrie Christmas Park was one of the six city parks closed due to high levels of toxic metals in the soil linked to ash from a now closed incinerator.

A public meeting will be held on Thursday to discuss the clean up plan.
