Marathon Man Arrested For Animal Cruelty

MARATHON (CBSMiami) - A Keys man was arrested after he allegedly kicked a dog in the face.

Monroe County sheriff's deputies were sent to the Winn Dixie shopping center in Marathon on Saturday after someone reported seeing a man yank a dog by a chain and kick it.

When deputies arrived they reportedly found 32-year old Anthony Wollweber trying to hook a chain from his RV, which was parked near a McDonalds, to a dog's collar.

The dog – a 10 month old brown pit bull – was clearly afraid of Wollweber. It was laying on its belly, tail tucked under, cringing away from him, according to the sheriff's office.

A witness told the deputies she saw Wollweber drag the dog by a chain and kick it the face.

Wollweber told deputies he woke up to find the dog, which had lapped up some seawater, had vomited and was covered in feces, according to the sheriff's office. He said he took the dog to a nearby convenience store and hosed it off. He added that the dog was normally cooperative, but wasn't today so he admitted to kicking it "but not hard".

Animal Control was called to the scene and took custody of the dog. Wollweber was arrested and charged with cruelty to animals and was booked into jail.
