Coast Guard Gets Lifesaving Medal For Rescue

MIAMI (CBSMiami) -- A local coast guard  was presented with a lifesaving medal Thursday for his part in the rescue of his friend from an attacking bull shark.

Read Adm. Jake Korn presented Connor Bystrom the Coast Guard Gold Lifesaving Medal at the Brickell Plaza Federal Building in Miami.

Four people also received a letter of appreciation in connection to the rescue.

The attack happened on September 24, 2011 off the Coast of Anna Maria Island, Florida.

The Gold Lifesaving Medal was established by Congress in 1874 and is one of the oldest military medals.
