Jury Finds Man Behind Deadly Mugging Guilty Of Murder

MIAMI (CBSMiami) - Mitchell Lee Simpson, one of two men accused on trial for the killing a Cutler Ridge teen over a gold chain, was found guilty of first-degree murder and a second count of robbery during commission of crime with firearm.

Simpson, 20-years-old at the time of the shooting, is accused of robbing and murdering 16-year-old Emmanuel Lacayo.

Simpson's, who faces the possibility of life in prison, sentencing date has been set for Thursday September 26th .

Lacayo was mugged and killed while walking with friends near Southwest 256th Street and 124th Court in May, 2008. When the trial started, his family members sat in court. They said they hoped to see Simpson put away for life.

"My son was murdered five years and three-and-a-half months ago and what we expect here and what we are praying for is justice. It's my duty as a mother to seek justice for him," said Linda Lacayo.

Investigators said Simpson had only been out of prison for about a month and a half before the shooting.
