Miami Man Dies While Boating In Key Largo

KEY LARGO (CBSMiami/AP) — Police are investigating the death of a Miami man who was on a boating trip in Key Largo.

According to Monroe County Sheriff's Office, 43-year-old Luis Fernandez and his girlfriend were on a boat Saturday when the incident happened.

At one moment of the trip, investigators said Fernandez decided to jump in the water and cool-off from the sun. His girlfriend told authorities that once he got into the water, a heavy current came in and began to sweep Fernandez away.

She said he tried to grab-on to a fishing line that was in the water, but it snapped and Fernandez drifted away.

His girlfriend also told sheriff's deputies that she tried to throw him a life jacket, but by that time it was too late. She said this was her first time on a boat and she did not know how to operate it.

The Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission responded and located Fernandez' body.
