Spiny Lobsters Being Served Up Down In Key West

KEY WEST (CBSMiami/FKNB) –  Grab the butter and head on down to Key West because the annual Key West Lobsterfest is underway.

The four-day salute to Florida's clawless spiny lobster goes through Sunday.

The festivities celebrate the beginning of the Florida Keys lobster season that opened August 6.

In addition to arts and crafts activities taking place around Key West, chefs from local restaurants are showcasing their lobster dishes at the Lobsterfest Street Fair.

The street fair is a festival highlight that continues through 11 p.m. Saturday on Key West's Duval Street.

The Keys' spiny lobsters are known for their sweet and tender meat. Keys lobster is often served steamed with drawn butter, paired with a seasoned stuffing or cold in savory salads.

A free outdoor concert takes place with performances throughout the event.

The celebration benefits a scholarship fund for local students.

The festival's final scheduled event is a Sunday lobster brunch at a local resort.
