Giant Manta Ray Swims Close To Hollywood Beach

HOLLYWOOD (CBSMiami) – Chopper 4 captured a really cool sight off Hollywood Beach Wednesday morning. It was a giant Manta Ray swimming pretty close to shore.

The water was so calm and crystal clear, perfect for all of those lobster lovers taking part in the 2-day Florida Lobster mini-season, that the camera captured the gentle giant gliding gracefully through the water.

Manta rays are large eagle rays and are often found in the tropical waters off South Florida.

Mantas either travel alone or in groups of up to 50. This single swimmer appears to be a loner.

Manta rays can grow to be nearly 30 feet wide but their average width is about 22 feet.

They usually live about 20 years.
