Local High School Makes Newsweek's "Best" List
MIAMI (CBSMiami) – South Florida parents looking for a top high school to enroll their child in may not have to look any farther than their own proverbial backyard.
Newsweek Magazine came out with its annual list of the best high schools in the nation and Miami's own School for Advanced Studies (SAS) was ranked in the top ten in the nation.
Over 2,500 high schools from all across the country were evaluated on factors such as graduation rates, participation in Advanced Placement courses and acceptance into four year college programs.
SAS, a dual-enrollment school, ranked sixth Best High School in the nation and second best in the state on the magazine's '2013 Best High School' list. No other school in Miami-Dade or Broward counties placed in the top 50.
Eleventh and 12th graders at SAS complete their last two years of high school while attending Miami-Dade College (MDC), many of them graduate with a high school diploma and an Associate of Arts degree from MDC.
SAS ranked the highest ever by a South Florida school in the Newsweek rankings.
The International Baccalaureate School at Bartow High came in second on the list, Suncoast Community High School in Riviera Beach came in ninth and Stanton College Preparatory School in Jacksonville was tenth.
The top school in the nation was Carol Martin Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Bowling Green Kentucky.
The magazine has been ranking the top U.S. high schools for over a decade. It assessed 5,000 public high schools across the nation and the best 2,000 were the ones that proved to be the most effective in turning out college-ready grads.
A total of 115 Florida schools made the prestigious list and 20 of them were from Miami-Dade. Here's the list of Miami-Dade schools:
