Alleged Coral Gables Robber Arrested

CORAL GABLES (CBSMiami) – Coral Gables Police believe they have caught a man who targeted an 81-year-old woman for a robbery over the weekend.

Police arrested Jefferson Montenegro and charged him with robbery for a purse snatching that saw the alleged thief get away with more than $2,000 worth of property.

"I turned like this and I saw a white man running like this and my daughter was running after him screaming to get the plates," said Hortensina Alonso, 81. "And then, he got into the car, they closed the door and another man on a bicycle went after him to get the license tag."

Surveillance video captured a white SUV that had an occupant get out of it near Alonso and then walk out of frame before running back to the SUV, allegedly with Alonzo's bag in his hand.

"It's great that they caught the person," Alonso said. "What luck. It's a horrible thing to do that to somebody. If possible, I'd like to get some of what he stole. He has really taken that feeling of safety from me."

Coral Gables Police said they believe the robbery was an isolated case, but are looking at the possibility of similarities to other recent crimes.

Montenegro has faced arrests in the past for burglary, battery, and grand theft.
