Coast Guard, NTSB Launch Investigation Into Carnival Triumph

MIAMI (CBS4) -  The United States Coast Guard and the National Transportation Safety Board have opened an investigation into the engine fire that crippled the Carnival Triumph while it sailed in the Gulf of Mexico earlier this month.

The fire, which broke out onboard the vessel on February 10 during a four day cruise, rendered the ship without power. Nearly 4,000 passengers and crew members spent the next five days on the boat without toilets or running water as a result of the fire. The ship was eventually pulled by tug boats to Mobile, Alabama.

The purpose of the investigation by the USCG and the NTSB  is to identify causal and contributing factors that led to the incident, as well as the crew's response to the situation, according to a news release by the Coast Guard.
