Police ID Man, Woman In Sunrise Church Shooting

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) -- Police have released the name of the man who shot his ex-girlfriend outside of a Sunrise church on Sunday before he turned the gun on himself.

According to investigators, Kelvin Adams shot Denise Miller outside the Faith Center Church in the 5500 block of NW 95th Avenue just before 1:00 p.m. Sunday.

"The service had just dismissed," Officer Michelle Eddy said.

"I heard what sounded like fireworks going off," parishioner Daron Thompson explained. "They basically told everyone just to go back in to the sanctuary."

Witnesses said the church was packed with more than a thousand people to hear a special sermon by televangelist Benny Hinn.

Investigators said Adams waited for Miller outside.

"The gunman, possibly an ex-boyfriend, approached the victim in the parking lot and fired several shots at the victim," said Eddy.

According to the detectives, Adams then turned the gun on himself.

They said the woman managed to drive away.

"She was able to get in her vehicle after being shot multiple times and drive across the parking lot where she was located with her 12-year-old daughter," Eddy explained.

The victim's daughter was not hurt.

Police said the gunman died at the hospital.

Miller is being treated at Broward General Medical Center. Police did not release her condition.
