Man Dies After Truck Plunges Into Plantation Canal

PLANTATION (CBSMiami) - A 72-year-old man died Monday evening after his pickup truck plunged into a 10-foot-deep canal in Plantation.

It happened around 10 p.m. Monday in the 6000 block of SW 13th Street. Police said the man was driving through the neighborhood, lost control and ended up in the canal. A woman who lives in the area said she heard an engine rev but when she looked outside she didn't see anything.

Minutes later, Good Samaritans got into their boat and raced toward the submerged truck. They said they felt a pulse and performed CPR on the man until paramedics arrived.

"The Good Samaritans, it was tremendous for them to make that commitment. They were able, in the dark, to willingly take their boat out, go out there and help somebody," said Plantation Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Joel Gordon.

The man was taken to Westside Regional Hospital where he died.

The driver's identity has not been released.
