HIALEAH (CBSMiami) – A Hialeah police officer was forced to fire at a suspect during a confrontation Monday afternoon.

According to Hialeah Police spokesman Eddie Rodriguez, an officer pulled over a reported stolen van with two people inside near SE 8th Court and Park Drive.

As the officer approached the vehicle, the driver tried to run him over. The officer opened fire and shot one of the suspects.

"That's a 2,000 pound weapon," said Rodriguez. "The officer had no other choice but to defend himself and the people around him."

The unidentified man was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital. His condition is unknown.

The officer was taken to a hospital to be treated for injuries from broken glass.

A woman in the car with the suspect was not injured in the shooting. She is also in police custody.
