New Demand From State: We Want Federal Immigration Database

TALLAHASSEE (CBSMiami) - The battle of demands between the state of Florida and the Department of Homeland Security over access to a federal immigration database hit a new level Tuesday, with the state issuing another demand letter.

Secretary of State Ken Detzner ent a new letter to Department of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano saying Florida has all the information needed in order to gain access.

As part of the state's campaign to purge the voter rolls of what it believes are dead voters, non citizens, and other ineligible people Florida wants to verify the citizenship status of thousands of voters on the rolls but the request has been turned down.

Recent letters from federal officials contend that Florida does not have the right registration numbers needed to identify voters. Florida last week filed a lawsuit demanding access to the database.

The state's push to remove potentially ineligible voters has come under fire. Several groups on Tuesday filed a new lawsuit contending that the effort is discriminatory.
