Four Year Old Nearly Drowns In Homestead Pool

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A four-year old boy remains hospitalized after he nearly drowned in a community pool.

It happened Sunday afternoon in a pool at the Waterstone development in Homestead. According to witnesses, early in the day, the boy's family had been teaching him how to swim.

"He looked so happy," said Gregory Murat, "He had the cutest little smile."

In the afternoon the boy and his mother returned to the pool, that's when things went horribly wrong.

"We saw the little boy jump back in the water after his mom left to go to the bathroom," said Murat.

When the woman returned, Jacqueline Berrouet said she knew something was very wrong.

"She was just walking back and forth," said Berrouet, "In noticed and (said) 'Did you lose something' and she was like 'Oh, I'm looking for my son' and I screamed."

Berrouet saw the boy in the pool and rushed to his rescue.

"She screamed and she pulled the boy out of the water," said Murat, "He just looked lifeless."

Berrouet and her family immediately tried to help.

"We just pumped his heart, pumped his heart and gave him CPR," said Berrouet.

The good Samaritans continued to give the boy CPR until the paramedics arrived.

"As a mother of five, if something like that was happening to me, I would lose my mind," said Berrouet.

The boy was rushed him to Miami Children's Hospital where he was listed in critical condition.
