"Santa's Helpers" Aid The Elderly During The Holidays

MIAMI (CBS4) - As the holidays approach, many of us will find it hard to make time to do everything from decorating to shopping.

It's an especially hard time of the year for South Florida seniors who want to remain independent, but a private company called Santa's Helpers, is helping this holiday season.

Preparing for the season takes time, and it can be overwhelming for seniors like Verline Moore who is recovering from a stroke.

"With that, it gave me another challenge in my life to deal with," said Moore to CBS4's Jorge Estevez

She has some trouble with her speech and getting around has become a challenge, but since she lives with her 9 year old granddaughter, Maya she wants it to be perfect. Moore has hired help from staff members at Senior Helpers, and is helping prepare for the holidays.

"I can be here. I can do this, but they help me. They help," said Moore.

The all year round program is designed to keep seniors independent and living at home. Now they have launched a new initiative to help during this time of year.

"We help them do little things around the house like light housekeeping and meal prep. We help with schedules and visiting friends. Even if they have pets. We walk the pets and take them the vet if necessary. We are there for them," said Yolanda Schon, of Senior Helpers of Miami.

Moore feels fortunate she can hire the extra help to help her through the tough times.

"Some days are easier. Some days are very tiring, but I keep looking forward to what's coming," said Moore.

Senior Helpers is a private company whose rate averages about 17 dollars an hour.
