Broward Mom Fit To Stand Trial For Allegedly Trying To Kill Kids

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) - A Coral Springs mom who was arrested in May for allegedly ramming her car into a garage door in an attempt to kill her two children has been declared fit for trial, a Broward Circuit Court judge determined Monday.

Jane Gonzalez, 46, is charged with two counts of attempted murder after police say she told her two children to unbuckle their seat belts moments before accelerating into the garage door of the family's home.

Gonzalez's two children, ages 7 and 10, were not seriously injured.

Gonzalez has been in a state mental hospital since the arrest. Her attorneys told Judge Mark Speiser she has been treated with medication and is able to participate in her own defense, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

In addition to the attempted murder charges, Gonzalez is also facing two counts of cruelty towards a child , one count of battery on a police officer, and one count of trying to remove a gun from an officer.

If convicted on all counts, she faces life in prison.
