Beginning Monday, Cash In On Going Green

MIAMI (CBS4) – Beginning Monday, going green will get you some 'green' thanks to federal grant for those who purchase energy efficient appliances.

The program called Energy Sense starts September 26th and will put rebates in the pockets of thousands of South Florida residents who buy energy efficient Energy Star refrigerators or washers. Miami-Dade has been awarded half a million dollars to be doled in rebates, Broward will be able to hand out $400,000 in rebates.

"I think it's great, I mean, I think it's a great incentive," said Jesus Huerta, a shopper at Brandsmart.

Huerta and his family were looking for a new washer and dryer after theirs broke.

"We go through a lot because she dirties a lot of clothes," he said referring to his five year old daughter. "So mommy is always doing the laundry. So its important, its important, plus the enviornment. I understand it uses less water less of everything."

Its a savings on his enegy bill and the purchase will be a $150 savings in rebates for him.

Mital Hall from Broward County's Sustainability Program said Energy Star appliances can save you roughly 20% off your monthly utility bill.

"Refrigerators are about one sixth of your utility bill. So we took that into consideration. The clothes washers they use energy and they utilize a great deal of water. Energy star washers save about 50% in water," Hall said.

For a new refrigerator, depending on the size, you can collect up to $250. For a washing machine you get $150 back. To be eligible for the rebate you must pre-register by phone or on the web. Then you have to purchase a new appliance before November 4th. Finally you must recycle your old appliance.

The appliance you are buying must have an Energy Star logo on it.
