Fla. Keys Man Dies While Snorkeling Near Marathon

MARATHON (CBS4)—A man died while snorkeling offshore of Marathon in the Florida Keys, according to authorities.

Robert Tyson, 57, was snorkeling with his girlfriend near the Sombrero Lighthouse Thursday afternoon when she lost track of him in the water, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office said.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Becky Herrin said 58-year-old Colleen Bartkovich of San Antonio, Texas, climbed onto their boat to look for Tyson. While she was searching for him, another boater came by and told her Tyson had been involved in an incident and was being taken to shore by a charter boat.

Deputies said someone on the charter performed CPR on Tyson until it reached shore, where paramedics took over. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The medical examiner's office is performing an autopsy.
