Police Ask Everyone To Be On High Alert As 9/11 Anniversary Approaches

MIAMI (CBS4) - With the 10 year anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks just days away, security is heightened all over South Florida.

Train stations and public transportation have more police presence . They are also concentrating on airports and crowded stadiums…just to name a few places.

But one of the biggest elements in the nation's security plan is you.

"The terrorist only has to get it right once, we have to be right 100% of the time," says Miami police Capt. Richard Walterman.

Walterman also works with Homeland Security.  He says the eyes and ears of the public are crucial in warding off terrorism. It's a matter of knowing what to look for.

"They would be nervous, sweaty, carrying a back pack, looking a little odd, not mixing, not relaxed," figures Laura Martin.

That could be what a potential terrorist looks like, but  police say you should also look for people who are maybe taking odd photos, like of train tracks or doorways.

We send Dwight Dean walking around in a winter coat on a Metro Rail platform, it should have set off alarms with people, but it didn't.  "What if you saw someone walking around in a jacket, would you call the police?" asked CBS 4's Ted Scouten.

"No," answered Dean, " I'd probably just think they were cold or something."

Police say wearing heavy winter clothes when it's hot is a huge red flag, one that people would notice if they pay attention to what's going on around them.

"If the hair on the back of your neck stands up after you see something strange, then I think that warrants a phone call," said Capt. Walterman.
