Tropical System Taking Aim At Cancun

MIAMI (CBSMiami.com) – A tropical disturbance continues to get better organized in the Yucatan Channel, east of Cancun.

Hurricane hunters will investigate the system this afternoon and if they find a defined center and enough convection; we will likely have our next tropical depression. If they find sustained winds of 39 mph then it will be the birth of Tropical Storm Don.

The whole area is moving westward, away from South Florida and poses no threat to the area. If the system forms, tropical storm watches or warnings may be issued for the area near Cancun.

CBS4 computer models show the system will likely continue to move west or northwest into the western Gulf of Mexico by Friday and possibly into Texas on Saturday.

This is a mixed blessing for Texas who could do without a major tropical system, but really needs the rain. Plus, a tropical storm would be a welcome sight to many in Texas who have endured countless days above 100 degrees and an exceptional drought.
