MIAMI (CBS4) — A Miami man convicted of Medicare fraud is listed on the federal government’s list of wanted health care fugitives.
Gustavo Adolfo Smith was convicted in 2008 of billing Medicare for nearly $3 million in bogus claims under his company MedStar Services. Shortly after his sentencing, Smith’s electronic monitoring device alerted authorities that he had fled. On Wednesday, the Department of Health and Human Services’ inspector general bumped Smith near the top of the fugitive list. The list, which includes a website with suspects’ photos, was launched in April.READ MORE: Overnight Fire in Fort Lauderdale High Rise Leaves One Dead, Another Hospitalized
Authorities hope it will drive callers to the tip hotline. Taxpayers absorb the roughly $60 to $90 billion Medicare fraud costs each year.
