Local Church Continues Fight For Haiti

NORTH MIAMI (CBS4) - More than a year after an earthquake devastated the island nation of Haiti, some have forgotten about the needs of the small country. But, a local church recently hosted a weekend long fundraiser with a message.

"We're trying to draw attention to the situation in Haiti that a million people are living in tents; the needs are great" explained Pastor Nigel Hundui of Evangel Church International in North Miami.

Pastor Nigel's idea is to put his parishioners in the position of those they're trying to help, and he knows it first hand from his many visits to Haiti since the earthquake.

"I think because we're used to living the American lifestyle we're soft. We like the easy life and we like our comfort and the reality is there are thousands upon thousands of people that have no comfort today and they are living in tents, not as nice as these ones here" the Pastor explained.

It's something he understands all too well, having visited Haiti throughout the years.

"My wife and I have been involved with Haiti for many years since 1981. We've gone back and forth with medical teams" said Hundui.

His congregation packed up their gear for a weekend on the church lawn to simulate what it's like to live without the comforts of a real home.

The church partnered with Food For the Poor to collect the items that those living in Haiti so desperately need.

"We're asking families to donate canned items, canned milk" explained Madeline Hundui, the Pastor's wife, adding "we're asking families to donate canned items, canned milk".

Everyday personal items like soap, also remain a great need, despite the amount of time that has past since the earthquake.

"We don't want the people to forget" explains the Pastor, "we just wanted to bring an awareness of what the church can do and how they can make a difference".
