Campus Guns Law Shelved By Legislature

TALLAHASSEE (CBS4) - After first delaying a decision on whether or not to allow guns to be carried on campuses, the GOP-led Florida Senate has shelved the provision of letting gun owners open carry their weapons on college campuses in the Sunshine State.

The move was made by Lakeland Republican Senator Paula Dockery. Instead of allowing guns to be carried on campus, guns will remain banned on campuses.

The bill will continue to allow gun owners with concealed license permits to carry their weapons in full view in stores but not at schools and other prohibited areas.

GOP Senator Greg Evers said in previous media interviews that he believes bringing guns on to school campuses improves safety.

The move to shelve the bill came just weeks after emotional testimony from the father of murdered Florida State University student Ashley Cowie.

Striking right at the heart of Evers justification, Cowie said, "Would you feel more or less at risk today if I were carrying a gun?"
