Miami Hosts Hurricane Conference This Week

MIAMI (CBS4) - Representatives from eleven federal agencies, nine universities, emergency managers and hurricane researchers are meeting in Miami this week to discuss and approve any changes in the way storms are forecast.

The 2010 Atlantic Hurricane Season was one of the busiest on record with 19 named storms, including 12 hurricanes. While the U.S. was spared landfall of a major hurricane, Haiti, Mexico and other Caribbean coasts weren't so lucky.

During this week's conference, federal meteorologists, military officials, emergency managers and academic researchers will review the nation's hurricane forecasting and warning program. They'll make recommendations to improve the program for the upcoming storm season which begins on June 1st.
