Cockfighting Operation Broken Up In Marathon

MARATHON (CBS4) - Five people were taken into custody Sunday when the Monroe County Sheriff's Office broke up a cockfighting operation at a Marathon trailer park.

The sheriff's office said Deputy Bradford Colen found the illegal ring and nearly 30 chickens and roosters when he went to the Trailerama mobile home park to check out a complaint. A cockfight was in progress when Colen arrived, the 10 to 12 foot ring partially hidden in a small fenced yard.

When those at the fight saw the deputy they scattered, backup deputies helped round-up five people, who were detained and may be arrested.

The birds were turned over to the county's Animal Control; some had missing eyes and injured legs.
