Hialeah Officer Hurt In Cruiser Crash

HIALEAH (CBS4) - Two people, including a police officer, were hospitalized following an early-morning collision in Hialeah.

According to Hialeah Det. Carl Zogby, a 48-year-old man driving a 2011 Chevy Aveo ran a stop sign at the intersection of E. 8th Avenue and 13th Street and crashed into a Hialeah police cruiser.

The Aveo spun out of control and slammed into a tree. The driver was partially ejected from the car. He was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital in serious condition.

The officer, who was on duty, was not responding to a call at the time of the incident. The officer suffered minor bumps and bruises and was taken to Hialeah Hospital to be checked out.

Det. Zogby says officers on the scene smelled a strong odor of alcohol coming from the Chevy Aveo. Blood tests will be taken to confirm if alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
